Joss Lowden, News, UCI hour record -

Joss Lowden has unofficially broken the women’s Hour Record

The women’s World Hour Record appears to have fallen, with Joss Lowden (Drops Cycling) riding 48.160 km in a training simulation. However, as the result was not officially timed, Vittoria Bussi’s mark of 48.007 km stands in the history books.

Lowden’s ride appeared briefly on Strava, but the activity has since been made private. The only public announcements to date of Lowden’s impressive effort have been from coach Sean Yates (yes, that Sean Yates) …

… and from aerodynamicist and fellow cyclist, Dan Bigham:

Lowden recently claimed the UK 25-mile (40.2 km) time trial title, and finished 12th in the 2020 Setmana Ciclista Valenciana.

Lowden’s unofficial mark would have beaten Bussi’s record by 153 m, a feat that’s made even more impressive by the fact Bussi’s ride was at the notoriously quick Aguascalientes velodrome in Mexico – which is at almost 2,000 m in altitude, and had favourable weather conditions at the time.

That suggests that Lowden could raise the mark even further if a genuine attempt is made in the future. In order for a ride to count as an official record, the athlete must satisfy a handful of requirements, not least having a UCI commissaire present to oversee the attempt.

As Sean Yates says, #moretocome.
