Swiss mountain bike and cyclocross star Jolanda Neff suffered a ruptured spleen, collapsed lung, and broken rib in a mountain bike crash in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina.

Neff, the 2017 cross country world champion, was beginning her preparations for a run at the World Cup cross country title and Olympic Games. She was scheduled to race the cyclocross world championships in Duebendorf, Switzerland on February 1st, but that start is now in doubt.

“I misjudged a downhill corner on a trail that was new to me during my training ride and I went off track and over the bars, falling into a pile of logs,” said Jolanda Neff. “I immediately knew something was wrong.”

Neff joined Trek-Segafredo in 2018. Though she is primarily focused on off-road pursuits, she joined the road squad early in the season for races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Neff was taken to a hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, where she stayed for three nights before being released. Doctors were able to save her spleen using a technique called embolization.
