Itching to race? Grinduro opens registrations for 2020 California event
We are excited to announce that CyclingTips is the official media partner of the 2020 Grinduro series. The unique format of Grinduro combines the best elements of a mountain bike enduro with a gravel grinder-style road race … all with “the perfect party-to-race ratio”.
In 2019, Grinduro expanded into four countries; this year organizers had planned to take the event to six stops around the globe. While Grinduro’s Swiss premiere in Lenzerheide has been postponed until 2021, organizers are still working hard to plan for their 2020 stop in California. With a close eye on safety and health guidelines, Grinduro will be opening registrations on Tuesday May 12 at 7pm Pacific time, for its California stop.
The California event, which is sponsored by Evil Bicycles, will take place at Mt. Shasta Ski Park on September 12, 2020. To give racers some peace of mind due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, racers will be offered refunds or deferrals in the event of a cancellation.
“Safety of the Mt. Shasta community and all Grinduro participants is our primary concern,” said Justi Hansen, Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance (SORA) Executive Director. “We are collaborating closely with the City of Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou County, Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District, and the U.S. Forest Service.
“All officials are in support of Grinduro, and we remain very hopeful that the event will happen as planned on September 12 in Mt. Shasta. We are so eager to share this amazing place with the Grinduro community.”
The Grinduro California course features 65 miles (105 km) and 7,800 feet (2,380 m) of elevation gain with four timed stages on a fun mix of singletrack and fire road. For those looking for something a little more low-key, Grindurito is also offered as a non-competitive, untimed fun ride of about 28 miles (45 km) and 3,700 feet (1,130 m) of elevation gain.
Grinduro is also looking to increase participation of FTW (femme, trans, women) from 15% to 30% at California. The event has reserved 210 registration spots for its new Open Gender category for women and cyclists from across the gender spectrum, including riders who identify as trans and/or non-binary.
“I have been racing for a long time,” said Amanda Schaper, Grinduro Event Director, “and events with more diversity are simply more fun. I am proud of what we’re doing to make all riders feel welcome at Grinduro California, and I hope other event organizers do the same.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance, an organization focused on promoting sustainable outdoor recreation.
