Ineos signs Adam Yates to a two-year deal
Adam Yates will join Ineos next season on a two-year deal in what is the first signing of this transfer season for the British WorldTour squad.
The move will split Yates from his twin brother Simon Yates, who just signed a contract extension with Mitchelton-Scott, for the first time in their respective pro careers. Both Yates brothers have ridden with the Mitchelton organization for the past seven seasons.
In that time, Adam Yates has accrued several strong results in one-week races, winning stages at races like the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tirreno-Adriatico and taking the overall title at this year’s UAE Tour, as well as winning the one-day Clásica San Sebastián in 2015.
His Grand Tour record in that time has been mixed. Yates rode to fourth overall and claimed the white jersey at the 2016 Tour de France, but since the has only produced one top 10 overall in a three-week race, finishing ninth at the 2017 Giro d’Italia.
“My results in weeklong races and one-day races have been really solid but I would like to take that consistency to Grand Tour racing with the INEOS Grenadiers and see where it takes me,” the 28-year-old Briton said via a press release.
Yates will be joining an Ineos team that is losing four-time Tour champion Chris Froome as he heads to Israel Start-Up Nation at the end of the year. In Yates, the team will have a stage racing talent long seen as a potential Grand Tour star, still hoping to develop into a consistent contender in the three-week races.
“I’m really delighted that Adam is finally joining the team,” said team principal Dave Brailsford. “It feels like the timing is just right as he enters the prime of his career and we embark on a new era as the INEOS Grenadiers.”
