Ineos confirms that Bernal, Thomas, and Froome will all target the Tour
In a video released by Ineos on Thursday, team principal Dave Brailsford laid out the team’s 2020 plans for its four recent Grand Tour winners: Egan Bernal, Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, and Richard Carapaz.
“As it stands at this moment in time, what we’re looking at is Richard going to race the Giro trying to retain his title there, and then for Geraint and Egan to take on the challenge and focus on the Tour,” Brailsford said. “And of course, Chris, coming back, he’s still really craving that big fifth win and he’s working very, very hard at the minute to get back to the level required to be competitive.”

Brailsford’s statement confirms various reports and rumors about the plans of the British WorldTour team that have emerged in recent months.
Carapaz, brought on from Movistar this transfer season after winning the Giro last season, was long expected to defend his title there. How the team would divide the past three Tour de France champions was somewhat less clear for much of the offseason, but all three of Bernal, Froome, and Thomas have said in recent weeks that they plan to target the upcoming Tour.
With Froome’s status as a bona fide contender the race likely unknown until later in the season as he continues to work his way back from the injuries he sustained in a 2019 crash, Ineos has its bases covered in deciding to have Bernal and Thomas both focused on the Tour’s general classification.
Brailsford also confirmed that newcomer Rohan Dennis will target the time trials at the Giro, noting that it fits in nicely with his goals for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
