Story of the Day: Hodeg recovering after crash, Trentin calls for safety updates
Two days after celebrating a solid victory at the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro, Álvaro Hodeg (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) was taken to the hospital following a bad crash in the finale of Saturday’s Tour de l’Eurométropole.
The 23-year-old Colombian hit the deck inside the final few hundred meters of the race after colliding with the protruding legs of the roadside barriers, and was left with fractures to his left forearm, right shoulder, and ribs.

Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) and Jacopo Guarnieri (Groupama-FDJ) were among the riders venting their frustration with the continued prevalence of potentially dangerous barriers despite the part they so often play in bad crashes.
The problem is not only there. We go at 60 km/h or more also in other part of the race. That kind barriers should be banned EVERYWHERE! Just look how dangerous they were in the worlds or i the GT TT this year! Flat feet barriers are available everywhere in the world! https://t.co/GQISjoagdf

As La Flamme Rouge points out on Twitter, the UCI’s organizers’ guide suggests barriers whose feet “do not encroach on the roadway,” but does not mandate them.
For Hodeg, a crash involving encroaching barriers left him requiring surgery, according to his Deceuninck-Quick-Step team. He has undergone an operation on his shoulder and remains in the hospital for observation.
Piet Allegaert of Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise would go on to take the victory in the Tour de l’Eurométropole. The Belgian sprinted to the win in Tournai ahead Florian Sénéchal (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo).

Colbrelli tops Valverde to win GP Bruno Beghelli
Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) picked up his first one-day win of the year on Sunday at the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli. The 29-year-old Italian, whose strong track record in Italy’s late-season circuit includes a prior victory at the race back in 2015, took the UCI 1.HC-rated win in Monteveglio after 199.3 very hilly kilometers.
Colbrelli was part of a small escape that pulled clear of the pack late in the day. Although the final kilometers saw a flurry of attempted attacks out of the group, things came down a sprint battle. Colbrelli proved fastest in the final kick ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), with Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott) in third.
Bastianelli tops Wiebes to win women’s GP Beghelli
Marta Bastianelli continued her strong season at the women’s GP Beghelli on Sunday in the kit of the Italian national selection, and she delivered for the home crowd.

The 32-year-old, who usually rides for Virtu Cycling, topped Lorena Wiebes (Parkhotel Valkenburg) in a sprint. Chiara Consonni (Valcar Cylance) rounded out the podium.
Adam Yates wins the CRO Race
Even after a name change from its former moniker, the Tour of Croatia, the newly rebranded CRO Race drew some big talents this week, and it was perhaps the biggest name in the race that came away with the overall win on Sunday. Mitchelton-Scott’s Adam Yates sealed the general classification title with a 22-second advantage over Davide Villella (Astana). CCC’s Victor de la Parte rounded out the final podium 29 seconds down.
Yates rode into the lead with a victory on stage 5 and held on through the sixth and final stage, won in Zagreb by Alessandro Fedeli (Delko Marseille Provence). The GC win marks Yates’s first stage race overall title of the 2019 season after close calls at Tirreno-Adriatico and the Volta a Catalunya.
Roglic takes first one-day victory as a pro at Giro dell’Emilia
Primoz Roglic rode to a career first at the Giro dell’Emilia on Saturday, scoring his maiden pro one-day win the lumpy Italian race.

The 29-year-old Slovenian, who won the Vuelta a España last month, soloed to the win in San Luca after 207.4 kilometers of racing from Bologna. Roglic crossed the line 14 seconds ahead EF Education First teammates Michael Woods and Sergio Higuita.
Schurter and Neff win Olympic MTB test event
Some big names made the trip to Tokyo to race the Olympic test event for the cross-country MTB race this weekend, and standing atop the podium when the dust settled were two riders likely to contend in the main event next summer.
Nino Schurter took the win in the men’s race, topping Victor Koretzky in a two-rider sprint. Luca Braidot took third. Notably, Mathieu van der Poel did not race after deciding to skip the event.
Jolanda Neff took the win on teh women’s side, topping Sina Frei and Anne Tersptra.
Things did not go as well for Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, who unfortunately broke her nose in a fall.

Ineos rumored to be in the conversation to sign Rohan Dennis
Rohan Dennis, whose contract with Bahrain-Merida was terminated last week, continues to be the subject of rumors as teams try to sign the reigning world time trial champion for 2020. La Gazzetta dello Sport recently reported that Movistar was among the favorites to land his services.
Now, the same outlet says Ineos may be in pole position to pick up the 29-year-old Australian.

Adding Dennis to an already powerhouse lineup would be an interesting proposition. At this point, though, the rumors remain just that.
