Giro stage 15 neutralized after large crash

The Giro d’Italia’s 15th stage came to an abrupt halt after just a few minutes of racing on Sunday following a large crash that forced the race’s course director Stefano Allocchio to temporarily neutralize the event.

The crash came 3km after the start as riders fought to make the day’s breakaway and took down a large portion of the peloton. The races’ medical staff were stretched thin, leaving them unavailable for any other potential medical issues. The race had no choice but to neutralize.

Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Jos van Emden (Jumbo-Visma), and Natnael Berhane (Cofidis) were the worst off from the crash, and all received medical attention before being forced to withdraw from the race. Buchmann had been in sixth place overall and was seen bleeding from an injury on his head, but was upright and conscious. The full extent of the three rider’s injuries is not yet known.

Ruben Guerreiro (EF Education-Nippo) was forced to abandon after restarting, riding just under 20 kilometers before climbing in his team car.

The race was stopped completely for 25 minutes before the peloton rolled out for a few neutral kilometers as medical personnel caught up to the back of the field.
