Story of the Day: Gilbert wins stage 17 of the Vuelta a España

Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) picked up his second stage victory of this year’s Vuelta a España on a stage 17 that played out in a way few predicted.

The 37-year-old Belgian took the win from the breakaway, which finished the stage well over an hour ahead of the time schedule, ahead of Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) with Deceuninck-Quick-Step’s Rémi Cavagna in third.

Movistar’s Nairo Quintana finished with the escapees to surge from seventh to second overall after a windy day that saw a massive break build a dangerous advantage on the pack in the early goings. A whittled down red jersey group ultimately managed to limit the gap to around five and a half minutes, keeping Jumbo-Visma’s Primoz Roglic in red, but with Quintana jumping back into the podium conversation and now sitting 2:24 back.

More to come…

That third-place finish was enough to propel Trentin back to the top of the GC standings after stage 4 winner Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) spent one day in the leader’s jersey. Trentin now leads van der Poel by three seconds with three stages left to race.
