Geraint Thomas wins stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) narrowly won stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné on Thursday with a well-timed late attack.

As the peloton neared the Saint-Vallier finish line after 175.4 km of racing from Saint-Chamond, the 35-year-old Welshman put in a solo dig inside the final kilometer. He quickly jumped out to a gap of a few seconds but the pack started to close him back down inside the last few hundred meters.

As Thomas rounded a final bend, he looked back and saw stage 3 winner Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) fast approaching from behind. The Italian closed in and very nearly pulled past, but Thomas held on – just barely – to take the stage victory.

Colbrelli settled for his third second-place finish so far in the race with Alex Aranburu (Astana-Premier Tech) taking third. Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished safely in the bunch to retain his GC lead.
