Geoghegan Hart abandons Paris-Nice after crash
Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) abandoned Paris-Nice on Wednesday after crashing on stage 4.
The reigning Giro d’Italia champion crashed on a curve during the descent off of Mont Brouilly. He remounted to resume the descent, but stopped after a few kilometers and pulled out of the race.
“He will now head to hospital for further assessment,” the Ineos Grenadiers said in a tweet. “Medical update to follow later.”
Ineos sport director Gabriel Rasch provided further details after the stage.
“On the descent there, his front wheel slipped in a corner,” Rasch said. “He was in fourth position or something like this. Really bad luck, really. I don’t know if there was some gravel or why he slipped. Then he landed on his face and his head and his knee pretty bad. He felt a bit dizzy. It was the right decision to stop him and not take any risks.”
In what was his second start of the season after the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var, Geoghegan Hart had started the day in 38th overall, 44 seconds back on GC.
His departure makes him the second Ineos rider to pull out of the French stage race due to a crash after Richie Porte abandoned the race after going down on stage 1.
