Wednesday featured no shortage of news from UAE-Team Emirates, which pulled multiple riders out of the Vuelta a Burgos in the morning and claimed a victory in the afternoon.
The UAE team announced early on Wednesday that it was pulling three riders out of the Spanish stage race due to their recent contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. The move was precautionary in nature as neither Sebastian Molano, Cristian Muñoz, or Camilo Ardila had returned positive coronavirus tests.
Only a few hours later, the UAE team picked up its first victory in an international race since March as Fernando Gaviria nabbed the stage 2 win in Burgos. The 25-year-old Colombian sprinted to the win convincingly ahead of Arnaud Démare and Sam Bennett.

| UAE team pulls three riders from the Vuelta a Burgos, Gaviria wins stage 2
UAE-Team Emirates started stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos with three fewer riders than initially planned. The squad finished the day with a win.
The UAE team said on Wednesday that it had pulled Sebastian Molano, Cristian Muñoz, or Camilo Ardila out of the race. All three riders had registered negative results in pre-race tests, but they had had “recent contact with a person who turned out to be positive for COVID-19 yesterday.”
A few hours later, despite the reduced support squad around him, Fernando Gaviria rode to a dominant stage 2 sprint win, navigating a late crash and then pulling well ahead of the rest of the field before the line. Arnaud Démare took runner-up honors in the stage with Sam Bennett in third.
After two days of racing, stage 1 winner Felix Grossschartner remains in the overall race lead.

Bora-Hansgrohe announced contract extensions on Wednesday for a trio of Grand Tour stage winners. Max Schachmann has signed on for four more seasons and Lukas Pöstlberger and Cesare Benedetti have extended for two.
Schachmann, the reigning German national champion, has emerged as one of the team’s most successful riders over the past two years. In addition to his national road title, he collected four WorldTour victories in 2019 and also finished on a Monument podium at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He got his 2020 campaign off to a fine start as well, taking the overall title at Paris-Nice.
“I have always said that with Max, we’re planning for the long term. He’s a perfect fit for us and I think he sees it the same way,” Bora-Hansgrohe manager Ralph Denk said in a press release. “With his overall win at Paris-Nice, he has also established himself as a stage racer. It remains to be seen how far he can be developed further along this path, but Max definitely has a number of other qualities. We want to help him find his place over the next coming years.”

While both riders are focused on the Tokyo Games for now, we could see them taking on brand new objectives in the future.
Courtney, who won the cross-country mountain bike world title in 2018, says she might target Cyclocross Worlds in 2022. The event is set to take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in January of that year. Reigning world time trial world Dygert, meanwhile, could target the Classics after Tokyo, with the possibility of a run at the Hour Record and maybe even the Giro Rosa overall potentially in her future as well.

Dutch up-and-comer David Dekker, the son of former pro Erik Dekker, has signed a two-year deal to join Jumbo-Visma.
The Dutch under-23 road champ rode to third at Le Samyn in March and picked up results in other lower-ranked events earlier this season, which he has spent as a member of the SEG Racing Academy Continental squad.
| Attaquer launches A-Line range
Sydney-based cycle clothing label Attaquer has launched a new lower cost range of clothes called A-Line. The range features simple single colour designs and a more relaxed fit when compared to the company’s Race or All-Day kits.
The range offers men’s and women’s garments including summer and winter jerseys, bibs, jackets and gillets.

Fizik has made an addition to its Tempo series of performance road shoes with the Overcurve R4 Wide, which features dimensions that cater to riders with wider feet.
Fizik says the Wide version of the shoe offers “a slightly roomier forefoot, higher volume ball and wider metatarsal area.”
The Tempo Overcurve R4 Wide Microtex is priced at $199.99, while the Tempo Overcurve R4 Wide Iridescent is priced at $229.99.
