Gallery: Heartbreak for Hirschi on stage 9 of the Tour de France

In his very first Grand Tour, 22-year-old Swiss rider Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) has been one of the stand-out performers at this year’s Tour de France. The former U23 world champion took a brilliant second place on stage 2, beaten only by Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) in a three-up sprint. And then on Sunday’s stage 9 he was even more impressive again.

Hirschi went clear on his own with more than 80 km still to race, and held off the GC favourites as they chased him through the Pyrenees. Hirschi was only caught inside the final 2 km and had to settle for third in the sprint that followed. Still, it was a phenomenal effort from a young rider who seems certain to win big at some point soon.

Our photographers were out in the Pyrenees to capture all the action from stage 9 of the 2020 Tour de France. Here’s what they saw.
