Gallery: A damp and dramatic Liège–Bastogne–Liège
Liège–Bastogne–Liège is a punishing race, taking in thousands of metres of climbing through the rolling hills of the Ardennes. In 2020, it was raced under slate coloured skies with the men’s and women’s pelotons threading their way through the dank forests of southern Belgium. At stake was a win in one of the sport’s most arduous, and ancient, races.
In the fourth edition of the women’s race, an audacious attack from ex-world champion Lizzie Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) on the penultimate climb saw her hold off a chasing Grace Brown (Mitchelton-Scott), with Deignan’s teammate Ellen van Dijk leading home a select group for third.
As for the men’s race, the finale saw an elite group form, including newly crowned world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep), the year’s revelation Marc Hirschi (Sunweb), Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emireates) of Tour de France fame, joined by a third Slovenian in Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-McLaren). Alaphilippe’s effervescence spilled over in a messy last kilometre that saw the Frenchman celebrating early, getting passed by Roglic, and finally being relegated to fifth for an “irregular” sprint that impeded Hirschi and Pogacar.
