Story of the Day: Fuglsang wins stage 16 of the Vuelta a España

Astana’s Jakob Fuglsang won stage 16 of the Vuelta a España on Monday, climbing to his first ever Grand Tour stage victory out of the day’s breakaway.

He held on to take the win 22 seconds ahead of lone chaser Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos), with Astana’s Luis León Sánchez taking third on the day.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) crossed the line in a select GC group to maintain his overall race lead, putting more time into several rivals, including Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana.

Groenewegen wins stage 3 of the Tour of Britain

Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) nabbed his second victory in three days at the OVO Energy Tour of Britain on Monday. The 26-year-old Dutchman topped Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) and Davide Cimolai (Israel Cycling Academy) in a sprint to win stage 3.

Groenewegen launched early on the slightly uphill finale after 182.3 kilometers of racing from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Van der Poel tried to get on terms in the closing meters but Groenewegen held on to take a clear victory.

Mitchelton-Scott’s Matteo Trentin finished fifth to maintain his overall race lead.

Van Dijk, Kirchmann injured in Boels Ladies Tour crashes

Sunweb’s Leah Kirchmann and Ellen van Dijk are both recovering from injuries sustained in separate crashes at the Boels Ladies Tour.

Kirchmann’s 2019 season is over after a stage 1 crash left her with MCL damage in her right knee. Van Dijk crashed hard in the prologue but continued racing only to crash again later in the week, sustaining multiple fractures to her pelvis.

Coming up at the Vuelta

The Vuelta peloton will get a much deserved breather on Tuesday in the second rest day of this year’s event. Racing resumes on Wednesday.
