The rumors are rumors no more. Chris Froome will leave Ineos at the end of the year—and he’ll be heading to Israel Start-Up Nation.
The team took the unusual step of announcing the impending arrival of the four-time Tour de France winner with a few weeks still to go until the transfer season, while taking care to say that he would be signing with the team on August 1, the day the transfer window officially opens.
Froome’s upcoming move will mark one of the biggest transfers in recent memory. Froome has been with Ineos since its inception as Team Sky in 2010 and has won four Tours de France in that time (along with his Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España wins). With both Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas on the roster, however, Ineos has found itself with three riders hoping for leadership at the Tour.
What his planned transfer will mean for Froome’s role at this year’s race remains to be seen.

| Froome is headed to Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021
After weeks of rumors, Ineos confirmed on Thursday that four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome would depart from the team at the end of the year, and Israel Start-Up Nation confirmed shortly thereafter that he would “sign a long-term contract on August 1st that will see Froome wear ISN’s blue and white until the end of his illustrious career.”
Froome has ridden with Ineos since its first season as Sky in 2010, racking up wins at all three Grand Tours in that time. With Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal on Ineos’s roster, however, Froome could no longer be certain of having sole leadership in the team.
“Given his achievements in the sport, Chris is understandably keen to have sole team leadership in the next chapter of his career – which is not something we are able to guarantee him at this point,” said team principal Dave Brailsford in a press release. “A move away from Team Ineos can give him that certainty. At the same time, it will also give other members of our team the leadership opportunities they too have earned and are rightly seeking.”
| UCI-commissioned report: Yorkshire Worlds generated over €28 million
The UCI has announced the results of a report it commissioned to assess the economic impact of four cycling events in 2019, including Yorkshire Worlds.
According to the Ernst and Young report, Yorkshire Worlds generated €28.2 million in “additional economic activity” for the region. The races drew an estimated 200,000 unique spectators.
The report also provided estimates for the economic impacts of a handful of other events. According to the report, 2019 ‘cross Worlds added a value of €3.6 million, BMX Worlds brought in €4.1 million, and the Val di Sole round of the MTB World Cup brought in €2.3 million.
| Pooley breaks the women’s Everesting record
Emma Pooley has broken the women’s Everesting record.
Pooley put in 10 laps on Switzerland’s steep Haggenegg climb – whose average gradient is around 13 percent – Pooley accrued 8,848 meters of elevation gain in under nine hours to set the new record at 8:53:36, around 15 minutes faster than the mark set by Hannah Rhodes last month.
“The whole point was to challenge myself: find my limits, and push them,” Pooley wrote on Strava. “Well ok, it felt more like my limits found me and punched me into a ditch but still: it was tough, I genuinely enjoyed it, and there was plenty of time to think.”
