Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso hit by a car while riding

Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has been hospitalised after being hit by a car while cycling in Switzerland.

Alonso’s Alpine F1 Team confirmed on social media that the 39-year-old was “involved in a road accident”, adding that Alonso is conscious and “awaiting further medical examinations” on Friday morning local time.

According to Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Alonso was riding near Lugano, southern Switzerland, when the incident occurred. He was taken to a local hospital where initial scans reportedly showed a fractured jaw and damage to his teeth. Alonso is expected to be transferred to a hospital in Bern for further assessment.

It is not yet clear how the incident occurred.

Alonso is a keen rider who, in 2014, made headlines in the cycling world for plans to start his own men’s cycling team. Alonso’s goal was for the team to race at the WorldTour level but the project was ultimately scrapped.

Alonso is a two-time winner of the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship having taken out the title in 2005 and 2006. It’s not clear whether this incident will impact the Spaniard’s 2021 Formula 1 season which is due to get underway on March 28 at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
