Davide Formolo won Friday’s stage 3 at the Critérium du Dauphiné, turning a long day off the front in the early breakaway into a mountaintop victory.

The Italian national road champion was the only survivor from the early escape on a stage that ascended the Col de la Madeleine and concluded with a summit finish at Saint-Martin-de-Belleville. Although a thinning pack maintained a strong pace behind him on the way up the final climb, Formolo managed to hold on out front to win with a comfortable margin of 33 seconds on the chasers.

When the GC group did arrive at the finish, it wace leader Primoz Roglic who led the way over the line for runner-up honors ahead of Thibaut Pinot. Egan Bernal, meanwhile, finished nine seconds down on Roglic, who now has a 14-second lead over of Pinot in the general classification standings.
