Filippo Ganna’s hour record attempt may not happen until 2023

Filippo Ganna has postponed his hour record attempt that was pencilled in for August this year.

“It’s already postponed. It won’t be in August,” Ganna told La Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday. “I wanted to only focus on the Tour de France without anything else on my mind. Once the Tour ends, I’ll decide the date.”

The time trial world champion is racing his first Tour de France with the high-flying Ineos Grenadiers. The Italian himself netted third in the opening time trial and finished sixth from the breakaway on Friday’s stage 13.

Ganna was due to challenge the record set by Victor Campenaerts in the Grenchen Velodrome towards the end of next month, but he’s now indicating the attempt will be delayed until after the World Championships in Wollongong at the earliest.

“It could be put back to next year,” he said. “It’s not my priority, as I’ve always said. Many people asked me to do it, it didn’t come from me. In any case, we’ll wait a little longer.”
