Fernando Gaviria relegated after clashing with DSM in Giro stage 6 sprint

Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria has been relegated by the race jury after a coming together with the Team DSM train of Alberto Dainese and Cees Bol in the sprint for the line on stage six of the Giro d’Italia.

The UAE rider was following the wheels of Mark Cavendish, Caleb Ewan, and eventual winner Arnaud Démare before he tried to move to the right-hand side towards the DSM lead-out with 300m to go, attempting to head through a gap that didn’t exist.

The move caused the five-time Giro stage winner to make contact with the two DSM riders, who narrowly avoided crashing, taking both riders and himself out of contention. As a result, Gaviria was relegated to 150th place, the last rider in the main bunch.

This comes after Gaviria openly expressed his frustration in Wednesday’s sprint finish where he experienced mechanical issues and was pipped to the line by Démare. The Colombian was seen lifting his bars and slamming his wheel on the ground in frustration and afterwards made comments that appeared to express dissatisfaction with his bike, which he later apologised for.

The 27-year-old’s last Grand Tour stage victory was in 2019 on stage three of the Giro. After coming third and second so far at this year’s race he will be hoping to have more luck in the sprints that come after the upcoming days featuring hills and mountains.
