Evenepoel will make his Grand Tour debut in 2020
Rising star Remco Evenepoel will make his Grand Tour debut this year at the Giro d’Italia, his Deceuninck-Quick-Step team has announced.
The promising youngster won the Clásica San Sebastián and rode to second in the elite men’s time trial at Yorkshire Worlds last season, his first as a WorldTour pro, at just 19 years old.
“It will be quite a big experience to see how I will feel and cope with the three weeks of demanding racing and the hurdles lying ahead, but at the same time, I’m very excited to just discover the Giro,” Evenepoel said in a team press release. “The plan is to take it day by day, see how things will go, give my best every time and enjoy it while continuing to learn.”
Evenepoel joined Deceuninck last year to much fanfare after dominating the junior circuit in 2018, winning both the junior road race and TT events at Worlds in Innsbruck in emphatic fashion. Midway through his first year in the pros, despite still being a teenager, he was turning heads with impressive results. In addition to his strong showings in San Sebastián and at Yorkshire Worlds, he also took the overall title at the Baloise Belgium Tour and won the European Continental TT championship.
In 2020, he is reportedly focused on hilly Classics like Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia, as well as the Olympics. Now, his team has announced that he will also get his first shot at Grand Tour racing, and with three time trials on the Giro route, he should have plenty of opportunities to put his engine on display.
Evenepoel’s season will get underway later this month at the Vuelta a San Juan.
