Ethics violations, Dumoulin on Jumbo, Froome and Quintana: Daily News Digest

Hello again, CyclingTips readers.
As another week gets underway, the UCI Ethics Commission has announced that it has found that Patrick Van Gansen committed ethics violations while managing the Health Mate-Cyclelive team.
The news has been a long time coming for anyone who has been following the case since news first emerged in June of last year that multiple riders had filed complaints against Van Gansen alleging abuse and sexual harassment.
Following the findings of the Ethics Commission, the UCI Disciplinary Commission has initiated proceedings on the possibility of sanctions being imposed.
Hopefully, whatever comes out of the situation will provide some kind of resolution for those affected, and perhaps, more generally, push the sport to do better when it comes to ensuring safe working environments for women.

| UCI: Health Mate-Cyclelive team manager committed ethics violations
Following an investigation by an independent agency, the UCI Ethics Commission has determined that former Health Mate-Cyclelive team manager Patrick Van Gansen committed ethics violations. The Ethics Commission had opened an investigation into Van Gansen following the submission of complaints against him by members of the team that alleged multiple incidents of abuse and sexual harassment.
The UCI Disciplinary Commission will now take over the case to determine what sanctions will be imposed on Van Gansen, who, at present, is no longer known to be working for any pro teams.
| Arkéa-Samsic extends two riders even amid racing hiatus
Despite the widespread race stoppage, Arkéa-Samsic squad has announced contract extensions for promising youngsters Élie Gesbert, with both Bretons set to ride on with the team through 2022.
“The fact that [team manager manager] Emmanuel Hubert has signed me to a two-year contract extension is a great show of confidence from him and the whole Arkéa-Samsic team in my regard,” said Gesbert, who recently suffered a broken kneecap. “I’m injured, and knowing that I have a contract for the 2021 and 2022 seasons is excellent for the morale: Firstly, given the current context of this pandemic, and secondly, in relation to my injury and this period during which I am still recovering.”

Eusebio Unzué talked about Nairo Quintana’s stint at the Movistar team in a recent interview with the podcast El Leñero, and the Movistar team manager opined that Chris Froome would have had a much harder time facing Quintana without the strong team around him. The way Unzué put it, Froome never had to face Quintana one-on-one.
Apparently, Chris Froome found humor in that sentiment.

He did go on to clarify that he still harbored a great deal of respect for a rider who has finished second behind him in two Tours de France.

| Dumoulin talks Jumbo-Visma and more
Tom Dumoulin answered a wide range of questions in an interview published in Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad on Sunday. Among the topics covered was his decision to join Jumbo-Visma – a team he referred to as the “Real Madrid of cycling” – after spending his entire pro career with the Sunweb organization.
“I just wanted to go to a team where I am not the only leader all year round,” he said. “We will have to accept during the Tour that maybe a teammate is better. Then we play his card.”
