Egan Bernal is back riding on the road and loving it
A little over two months after the horrific training crash that left him with 20 broken bones, Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) is back riding on the road. And judging by his Instagram post on Sunday evening Colombian time, he’s pretty happy with his progress.
“The happiest day of my life,” Bernal wrote of his ride. “After 2 months and 20 broken bones, here I am, and I want more!! See you on the road guys 
”
Bernal’s post features seven photos of him out riding near his hometown of Zipaquirá, joined by several other riders, including his girlfriend Maria Fernanda.
Bernal’s crash left him with an extensive list of injuries including a fractured femur, a fractured patella, a punctured lung, and 11 fractured ribs. A neurosurgeon reportedly told Bernal afterwards that, based on his injuries, the 2019 Tour de France winner had a 95% chance of dying or ending up a paraplegic. Instead, Bernal has made a remarkable recovery.
Less than two weeks after his crash Bernal was up and walking. He was soon back pedalling an indoor bike and by early March, he was back riding on his indoor trainer. Bernal’s outdoor ride is the latest step in a recovery that seems to be progressing better than anyone could have expected. Could he be back racing by the end of the year, as his coach has hinted at?
