Egan Bernal has been discharged from hospital two weeks after sustaining a staggering list of injuries in a training crash, and just days after leaving intensive care.
“At this time, the patient is in the third phase of the trauma, ready to start his rehabilitation process,” read the statement released by the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana. “He has no complications and all his injuries are stable and in the process of recovery.
“Due to the above, we are pleased to report that today the patient has been discharged, to continue his rehabilitation process on an outpatient basis with our institution, the premier rehabilitation clinic in Colombia, accredited since 2015 by the international entity, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
“Today we give more meaning and strength to the words that we carry in our institution as a mission. With pride and hope we begin a new stage together with our athlete.”

Bernal has been a patient at the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogotá, Colombia, since Monday January 24, when he collided with a bus while training on his TT bike. He perforated both lungs and broke no less than 20 bones, including 11 ribs, a femur and the T5-T6 vertebrae, and since his first night in hospital he’s undergone a number of major surgeries. The biggest concern was the damage to his spine, but he came through two spinal operations without any complications.
