Dygert will miss upcoming Classics due to Epstein-Barr virus

As VeloNews reports, Chloé Dygert (Canyon-SRAM) will not race the upcoming Classics due to the Epstein-Barr virus.

The 25-year-old American, who won the world time trial title in 2019 and is the reigning national champion of the discipline in the United States, noticed that something was not right when she raced the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in February.

She has since been diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr virus. Canyon-SRAM officials say that she is recovering in the United States, with her path back to racing unclear at the moment and “no real start date right now.”

Dygert’s bout with Epstein-Barr comes as she had been working to race a fuller road program after a serious leg injury she sustained in a crash in the TT at Imola Worlds in 2020 derailed some of her plans for the following season. She nonetheless won a bronze medal with the US women’s team pursuit squad at the Tokyo Olympics in addition to riding the road race and finishing seventh in the TT, and she also took the US national TT title – but a busier road calendar had been on tap for 2022.

Now, Dygert is focusing on her recovery instead. According to VeloNews, team officials are hopeful that she will be back to racing in time for the US national championships in June with a potential Tour de France start to follow.
