Demi Vollering sprints to victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Demi Vollering (SD Worx) won her first WorldTour race at Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday when she out-sprinted a strong group of five. Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) finished second and third, respectively.
A large group hit the bottom of the final climb of Côte de Roche-Aux-Faucons with 14.5 km to go. Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx) set the pace at the front and with the world champion leading, the group lost riders one by one, until there was only a small group remaining.
Over the top of the climb, the race had been reduced to only six riders. Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope) chased from behind and caught the front group with 11.8 km remaining.
The group of eight did not stay together long as Van Vleuten attacked with 11.4 km to go. The European champion was followed by Van der Breggen, Longo Borghini, Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) and Vollering. Under the pressure, Vos and Uttrup Ludwig were distanced once more. The two were joined by Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (SD Worx).
It came down to a sprint between the five in front won by Vollering with Van Vleuten and Longo Borghini.
