COVID-19 positive delays Bernal’s return to Colombia

Egan Bernal’s return to Colombia following his Giro d’Italia victory has been delayed after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Bernal, who secured the second Grand Tour win of his career on Sunday in Milan, announced via a press release that he was planning to head home on Saturday “to share his title with the country.” In pre-travel tests, however, he and his partner Maria Fernanda returned COVID-19 positives.

Instead of returning to Colombia, Bernal and Fernanda are now isolating at their home in Monaco.

According to the press release, they are experiencing mild symptoms without complications.

Bernal will plan to head to Colombia following his recovery, and from there, he could build towards the Vuelta a España. He said during the Giro that he does not expect to race the Tour de France – which he won in 2019 – and that he was uncertain whether he would race the Olympics either.
