Chris Froome will not race until March
In early January Chris Froome announced via a YouTube video that a knee injury had disrupted his 2022 preparation. With the 2022 racing season weeks away from kicking off, Froome’s Israel-Premier Tech team has said the former Tour de France champion will not start a race until mid-March.
“It is difficult to estimate what we can expect from Chris, but we are trying to get the most out of it,” said the sports manager of Team Israel-Premier Tech Rik Verbrugghe.
Froome is still working his way back from a crash ahead of the time trial at the 2019 Criterium du Dauphine. His injuries were extensive and have prolonged his return to top form. Despite being one of Israel-Premier Tech’s top riders, Froome struggled to perform in his debut season for the new team in 2021.
“Chris had to end his season earlier than planned last year due to bilharzia and tried a few other sports in the interim season, such as running and swimming, to rebuild,” said Verbrugghe. “But that resulted in a knee injury. In the meantime, he is cycling again, albeit without any form of intensity.”
The most significant event Froome will miss is Paris-Nice, which takes place from March 6th to the 13th.
“It makes no sense to make plans about his competition program now. First, he has to be one hundred per cent fit,” Verbrugghe said.
