Chris Froome out of the Dauphine after crashing during course recon
Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome is out of the Criterium du Dauphine after crashing hard during course recon ahead of the race’s stage four time trial. Team Ineos confirmed that he has been taken to hospital and has pulled out of the race.
“Team INEOS can confirm that Chris Froome crashed during a recon of stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine today,” the team said via Twitter. “He is currently on his way to a local hospital and won’t start today’s fourth stage.”
Froome rolled out for course recon with his teammates Wednesday morning in windy conditions. According to an unconfirmed report in Het Nieuwsblad, Froome was caught by a gust of wind and thrown from his bike, landing on his right hip. L’Equipe is now reporting that Froome may have a broken pelvis, citing an unnamed Ineos team manager. Froome’s bike was returned with apparent damage to the right side of his handlebars. A complete diagnosis has not yet been released.
After a quiet first half of the season, the Criterium du Dauphine was Froome’s final tune-up race ahead of his run at a historic fifth Tour de France title, and Wednesday’s time trial was going to be his only time trial test ahead of the Tour. Froome was sitting close to the lead before pulling out on Wednesday.
