Welcome to your Daily News Digest. Here’s what’s happening today:

Kasia Niewiadoma leads the Giro Rosa after her Canyon-SRAM team wins the opening team time trial, Jack Bobridge sentenced on drug charges, Chris Froome leaves the hospital. Those stories and more in today’s Daily News Digest.

Story of the Day: Canyon-SRAM wins the opening TTT at the Giro Rosa

Kasia Niewiadoma leads the Giro Rosa after her Canyon-SRAM team took a convincing victory in the opening time trial, topping Bigla and CCC-Liv.

The rolling 18-kilometer TTT from Cassano Spinola to Castellania saw some squads split up over the course of the journey, particularly in the early goings.

Bigla, rolling down the start ramp midway through the race, took control of the hot seat with a time of 32:05 that withstood several challenges until a well-marshaled Canyon-SRAM team bossed the course for a time of 31:41.

Of those that followed, CCC-Liv came closest to Canyon-SRAM’s time but was still a distant third on the day at 32:26. Mitchelton-Scott, the team of defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten, and Boels Dolmans were the last two teams across the line, setting the fourth and fifth best times.

Niewiadoma will take the race leader’s jersey and a significant advantage over her GC rivals into stage 2, a 78.3-kilometer stage in and around Viù that finishes on a false flat.

Socially Speaking

Egan Bernal (Ineos) went from breaking his collarbone this spring to heading to the Tour de France as a pre-race favorite, which is pretty impressive. Maybe it’s been helpful to have a training partner like Tao Geoghegan Hart, who joined the broken collarbone club himself in May.

Froome home from hospital

While his Ineos teammates are gearing up for the Tour, Chris Froome continues to recover from the injuries he sustained crashing during his recon of the Critérium du Dauphiné time trial. Ineos team principal Dave Brailsford shared good news regarding Froome’s road back to health while talking to media at the Tour de France.

“He left hospital yesterday and was transferred home,” Brailsford said. “It’s a big step for him. He’s managed to put his feet on the floor for the first time in quite a long time.”

All told, Froome spent around three weeks in the hospital.

“The guys here have been to visit him and they think that he’s in remarkable spirits for the situation that he’s found himself in,” Brailsford said. “He’s adjusted to it.”

Bobridge sentenced on drug charges

Former track and road pro Jack Bobridge has been sentenced to more than four years in prison on drug charges.

The 29-year-old Australian was convicted of dealing ecstasy in Perth.

During his racing career, Bobridge rode to two Olympic silver medals on the track and two Australian national titles, a Tour Down Under stage win, and an Eneco Tour stage win on the road. He retired in 2016 at the age of 27.

He has now been sentenced to four years, six months in prison, with a possibility of parole after two and a half years.

Coming Up at the Tour

The Tour de France is almost here. Racing gets underway on Saturday with a 194.5-kilometer stage 1 that sets out from Brussels and loops through parts of both Flanders and Wallonia before returning to Brussels.

With no huge climbs on the rolling parcours, stage 1 should be a good one for the sprinters, so keep an eye on the likes of Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma), Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal), and Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Giant revives Cadex

Giant is bringing back the Cadex brand, albeit in a different form from its early days as a carbon road bike. Giant is re-dedicating the name to high-end components, launching several new products in the run-up to the Tour de France.

The 42s are the shallowest wheel in the Cadex range.

Among the new Cadex offerings are a wheel system, saddle, and tires.

Dave Rome has the details—click here for more on the revived Cadex.
