Hello again, CyclingTips readers!
For many of us, this week will be about working our way back into the swing of things in a new year after the holidays. That’s going to be a bit harder for Canyon, unfortunately, as the bike brand was recently hit by a cyber attack.
Canyon says that an attack showing “massive criminal intent” accessed the company’s IT systems and will result in delays for some orders, which probably isn’t how the people over at Canyon or their consumers wanted to kick off 2020.
Canyon says the intrusion has been stopped and that authorities have been notified. Fortunately, it sounds like the delays will be mild and temporary as Canyon works to get things back on track after the attack.
Until next time, readers.
What’s News
| Canyon hit by cyber attack
Bike brand Canyon was hit by a cyber attack over the holidays. According to the German-based company, the attack was carried out by a professional group that specializes in such activities. Canyon says the attack has been stopped and authorities have been notified.
“Our Koblenz site was directly affected, as were all our international companies with the exception of the US company, as it operates its own IT system,” said CEO Roman Arnold. “Unfortunately, we expect delays in customer contact and delivery in the next few days.”
| Brailsford: Don’t underestimate Froome
Ineos team principal Dave Brailsford has told La Gazzetta dello Sport that Chris Froome and the team “will do their utmost to make sure he gets to the Nice start line” for this year’s Tour de France.
Italian media recently reported that things were going slower than expected as Froome works his way back from injuries sustained in a 2019 crash, but Froome himself posted to social media on Sunday that his recovery is “going well.” In his interview with La Gazzetta, Brailsford gave his own vote of confidence to the four-time Tour winner, saying, “Nobody should underestimate Froome.”
| Kristoff says he gained six kilos during early goings of 2019 Tour
Alexander Kristoff told Cyclingnews in a story published Monday that he gained six kilograms over only a few days at the start of the 2019 Tour de France. At the time, media reports quoted riders pointing to a change in sports drinks as a cause of an underperforming UAE-Team Emirates squad, although Kristoff said that was only part of an array of issues.
“There are many things that happened,” he said. “Ultimately, the whole squad was too heavy I maybe started the Tour at 77.9kg and after a few days I was close to 84kg. Then it’s difficult to perform.”
| Neff to miss at least three months after crash
Jolanda Neff will be away from competition for at least three months after crashing while mountain biking in North Carolina, her Trek team has announced. The 2017 cross-country world champ required an emergency operation to stem bleeding in her spleen.
“I will not race again until after March. I fly back to Switzerland next week to make plan with the Swiss Olympic team doctor, Patrik Noack, on how to go forward,” she said in a press release. “The more I rest, the faster I recover.”

| What goes on at WorldTour training camp
Dave Everett attended the Israel Cycling Academy team training camp to get the story on what goes on when the pros get together to work their way back into form for the season. As it turns out, a WorldTour training camp can include scooter crashes, dirty shoves, and even sand storms.
