Cameron Meyer takes long-awaited Nationals road race win
BUNINYONG, Australia (CT) – After five previous finishes inside the top six, Cameron Meyer (Mitchelton-Scott) has finally won the Australian road race title.
Meyer attacked from an elite lead group on the final of 16 laps up Mt. Buninyong and swiftly opened a sizeable lead. There was a flurry of attacks to try and bridge across but with Mitchelton-Scott numbers preventing a coordinated chase, Meyer was able to build an unassailable advantage.
The West Australian crossed the line 56 seconds ahead of teammate Lucas Hamilton who attacked in the closing kilometres. Marcus Culey (Sapura), who led the race for much the afternoon in a small breakaway, fought back to the lead group then attacked again to take an impressive bronze medal.
Meyer’s win comes after previous finishes of second, third, fourth (twice) and sixth.
More to come …
