Cameron Meyer takes back-to-back Aussie titles in incredible sprint finish

BUNINYONG, Australia (CT) – Cameron Meyer (BikeExchange) has taken his second straight Australian road title in an incredible sprint finish from a reduced bunch.

Meyer had been dropped on the penultimate of 16 laps up Mt. Buninyong but fought his way back to the front of the race with the help of teammate Luke Durbridge.

A group of eight contested the sprint for the finish with Kell O’Brien (Inform TMX Make) hitting out early and looking to have the race won. But Meyer caught and passed O’Brien right on the line to take a tight victory. Scott Bowden (TIS) took the bronze medal.

The 185.6 km contest offered 4 hours and 40 minutes of dynamic, unpredictable racing, with dangerous a big breakaway getting away early and a threatening solo move from ITT champ Lucas Plapp (Inform TMX Make). But after a flurry of action in the closing laps the race came down to a reduced group, with Durbridge playing an invaluable role in chasing for Meyer.

More to come …
