Caleb Ewan sprints to victory at Giro d’Italia stage 5
The flat stage ended in a bunch sprint between the top sprinters. Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) took his first stage victory of the Giro d’Italia ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo (Team Qhubeka ASSOS) and Elia Viviani (Cofidis, Solutions Crédits).
Crashes marred the final 15 km of the race, with general classification hope Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) and the mountain classification leader Joe Dombrowski (UEA-Team Emirates) going down near 3 km to go. Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) also crashed when he was squeezed to the left of the road and brushed against a tree.
Bora-Hansgrohe led the big sprinters into the finish, with Alpecin Fenix taking the final run into the sprint. Ewan and Nizzolo sprinted side by side to the finish with the Australian taking stage honours at the line. Viviani held on to take third in front of Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe).
Alessandro De Marchi finished safely within the bunch and remained in the pink jersey ahead of stage 6. Landa did not finish the stage.
