Hello again, CyclingTips readers!
A few days after Michele Ferrari’s name returned to the headlines, with Scandinavian media reporting that the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation had information suggesting that the banned doctor could be working with Astana riders, the CADF has finally weighed in.
The highlights from Wednesday’s statement: The CADF did receive information alleging a connection and sought further intel, but after review, it decided against submitting a report with the UCI to initiate disciplinary proceedings. The organization said it regretted the leak and was conducting an inquiry on how it came about.
What a week it has been so far.
Meanwhile, there is a lot of actual racing going on all over the globe. The Herald Sun Tour, Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, Saudi Tour, and Étoile de Bessèges are all underway, which means there are plenty of familiar names back in racing action now.

| CADF decided not to initiate disciplinary proceedings after reports linking Ferrari and Astana
Following reports in Scandinavian media that the CADF had information alleging that Michele Ferrari was working with Astana riders like Jakob Fuglsang, the organization has released a statement. The CADF confirmed that it did receive the information in question and sought further intel on the topic, but said that it ultimately decided not to submit a report to the UCI to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
In the statement, the CADF also said it “deeply regrets that the report was leaked,” and is conducting an inquiry on how the information reached the public.
| Pedersen extends with Trek-Segafredo
World road champion Mads Pedersen has extended his contract with Trek-Segafredo. The 24-year-old Dane will ride on with the squad through the 2022 season.
Pedersen has ridden with Trek since 2017. His notable results since then include a Tour of Denmark overall win, runner-up honors at the Tour of Flanders, and the rainbow jersey he won last fall in Yorkshire.
| Groenewegen wins Valencia opener
Dylan Groenewegen took his first win of the year in his first race of the year, sprinting to victory on the first stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.
The Dutchman pipped Fabio Jakbosen and Alexander Kristoff in a bunch kick in Vila-Real, Spain, taking the first race lead.
| Brunel wins stage 1 of Étoile de Bessèges
Alexys Brunel powered to the first pro victory of his career on the first stage of the Étoile de Bessèges.
The Frenchman hit the line one second ahead of Benoît Cosnefroy with Edward Planckaert in third, three seconds back. Brunel takes a three-second GC lead into Thursday’s second of five stages in the French race.
| Bonifazio wins Saudi Tour stage 2, Costa accused of push
Niccolò Bonifazio nabbed the second stage of the Saudi Tour, topping Phil Bauhaus and Nacer Bouhanni in Riyadh.
Rui Costa retained his overall race lead, although the day was not without incident for the former world champ. Roman Kreuziger, after the stage, accused Costa of pushing another rider in a tweet that also included video.

Costa addressed the incident on social media. “I would like to clarify that it was [Reinardt Janse] Van Rensberg who accidentally came to my side and my gesture was to protect myself from crash,” Costa wrote on Instagram.
“After the stage, Van Rensburg came personally to our bus to clarify that this situation happened due to a teammate touch[ing] him and his gesture is really appreciated.”
| Sierra and Dainese take stage 1 wins at Herald Sun Tour
The Herald Sun Tour got underway on Wednesday, with Arlenis Sierra and Alberto Dainese nabbing the stage 1 victories.
After crosswinds forced splits in the bunch, Sierra won a reduced sprint in the women’s race, topping Anna Trevisi and Ruby Roseman-Gannon in Shepparton. On the men’s side, Dainese triumphed in a bunch sprint, with Kaden Groves in second and Moreno Hofland in third.
| Shimano acquires Pioneer’s computers and power meters
Pioneer Electronics has announced that it is selling the cycling part of its business to Shimano, effective in March of this year.
According to the announcement, the sale includes “pedaling monitors, cycle computers, and other related products,” along with all associated assets.
