Bouhanni fractures vertebra in crash with pedestrian at Tour of Turkey

Nacer Bouhanni was one of multiple riders brought down in a crash at the Tour of Turkey on Monday’s stage 2 amid a collision with a pedestrian who was in the road with his back to the peloton.

Video of the incident showed a man seemingly unaware of the approaching bunch walking in the same direction that the race was traveling. By the time other spectators had started to call out to him, it was too late. A nearby spectator made a last-second attempt to pull the pedestrian out of the way, but multiple riders collided with both individuals.

According to Arkéa-Samsic, Nacer Bouhanni suffered a fractured vertebra in the crash, while Kevin Ledanois suffered “major trauma to the left knee and pain in the thoracic spine.” Manuel Peñalver (Burgos-BH) suffered a broken elbow and underwent surgery. Mirco Maestri (Eolo-Kometa), whose collision started the pileup, posted a photo of himself sporting scrapes and bruises after the incident.

Bouhanni and Peñalver left the race, while Ledanois and Maestri are set to continue on.

Unfortunately for Arkéa-Samsic, GC leader Nairo Quintana was involved in two separate crashes later in the day, dropping out of GC contention.
