Belgian Bjorg Lambrecht died Monday following a crash at the Tour of Poland. The second-year pro with Lotto-Soudal was 22 years old.

Lambrecht went down in a crash near the town of Zory during heavy rainfall and struck a culvert. He was immediately treated by the race’s medical staff, and required emergency resuscitation.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in Rybnik by ambulance, but according to Polish media, he died during surgery.

Bjorg Lambrecht (Belgium) was second to Swiss rider Marc Hirschi, while Jaako Hanninen (Finland) was third.

Lambrecht, who finished second at the 2018 U23 world road championship in Innsbruck, finished an impressive sixth at the Amstel Gold Race and fourth at the Flèche Wallonne in April. In June, he won the best young rider competition at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

CyclingTips extends its sincere condolences to Lambrecht’s family, friends, and teammates.
