Bikes of Unbound Gravel: Jess Cerra’s Pinarello Grevil
Jess Cerra’s talents meet in a very neat Venn Diagram consisting of mountain biking, triathlon, and food. She’s a chef on top of being a pro racer, and with a background in disciplines both on and off the pavement, her strengths seem tailor-made for gravel. Cerra finished the 2021 edition of Unbound Gravel with 10th place in the women’s field.
Cerra’s ride is a Pinarello Grevil, the same model of bike as fellow competitor Amity Rockwell. However, where Rockwell’s bike is built with parts from Easton and Shimano, Cerra’s is obviously different. Like so many of her competitors, Cerra has opted for a SRAM eTap AXS ‘Mullet’ drivetrain that combines an Eagle rear derailleur and 10-50 cassette with a Force crank with a 42-tooth ring.
Other components, including wheels and cockpit, come courtesy of Enve. She has chosen a low-profile rim in the Enve G23 wheels, and a unique tire choice: René Herse Hurricane Ridge tires (700×42 mm).
A close look at Cerra’s handlebars reveals the use of TOGs Road which act as small thumb rests when in the drops. This offers Cerra stable hand support as the rugged terrain of the Flint Hills wears away at her palms, arms, neck, and shoulders in the latter miles of the race.
See below for a look over Cerra’s ride.
Pinarello isn’t likely to be the first brand you think of in the gravel market. The Italian company had two of its bikes inside the women’s top ten over the weekend. Much like Rockwell, Cerra is using the regular Grevil which is a little heavier than the Grevil +. An Enve cockpit matches the wheels. This bike belongs to Jess. Jess Cerra got her elite racing start in XTERRA off-road triathlon before transitioning over to the road. Cerra raced on René Herse Hurricane Ridge tires in a 42 mm width. A SRAM Force crank and Shimano XTR pedals. Cerra uses a 42T ring on the front. The SRAM XX1-level components feature an unmistakable rainbow oil slick finish. A 10-50T cassette provides more than enough range for the 200-mile gravel race. Enve G23 wheels aim to balance low weight and ride comfort. Note the small amount of silicone to ensure a good seal of the valve. Yet another Specialized Power. This saddle is extremely popular in the women’s (and men’s) field. There’s no mistaking the shapes of a Pinarello. A Wahoo Roam sits on top of the stem. Cerra uses a K-Edge Adjustable stem mount to hold the computer in place. This mount sits in place of a headset spacer. An aero-shaped bar provides a larger grip on the tops. Cerra runs TOGS Road for a little extra support when in the drops.
