Bikes of Unbound Gravel: Amity Rockwell’s Pinarello Grevil
Everything about Amity Rockwell’s Unbound Gravel race rig is new. When she won Unbound Gravel in 2019, she did it on board an Allied Able. Now she’s sponsored by Pinarello, so she gets the chance to defend her crown aboard some svelte Italian craftsmanship.
I asked Rockwell if she felt any extra pressure being the reigning champion with the absence of the race last year during the pandemic. But she seemed unfazed; she had appeared on the scene quite abruptly, and in turn, racing shut down rather abruptly. If Rockwell is able to repeat her 2019 success, however, the attention and notoriety will likely be a lot harder to miss.
Rockwell’s Grevil is outfitted with an 11-speed Shimano Frankenstein drivetrain; she runs Easton EC90SL cranks with a 40-tooth chainring, a Shimano GRX rear derailleur with oversize Kogel pulley system, and Shimano Ultegra Di2 shifter/brake levers. Rockwell says she prefers the shape of the Ultegra levers over GRX, and the Kogel pulley system helps reduce drivetrain friction. Every little bit helps over 200 miles of Kansas gravel.
While Rockwell spent time training on Wahoo/Speedplay pedals, she has switched over to Shimano XTR SPDs for her Unbound battle.
And while she was hesitant at first to replace her beloved Schwalbe G-One Allroad tires, Rockwell says she’s a big fan of the brand new G-One R tires, which combine durability with a supple ride feel.

Amity Rockwell will line up for the 200-mile gravel event onboard a Pinarello Grevil.
Pinarello offers both the Grevil + and Grevil. Both bikes share the same mould but the “+” version features a higher modulus carbon construction. It’s likely that the slightly heavier Grevil offers a subtly smoother ride. Amity Rockwell is the reigning champion of Unbound Gravel, an event she won in 2019. Rockwell is running Schwalbe’s latest gravel racing tyre, the new G-One R. It’s a tyre that’s launched at the Unbound Gravel event. The bike is set up with 1×11 gearing. Rockwell is running a 40T chainring matched with an 11-42T cassette on the back. That isn’t a huge range, but Unbound Gravel isn’t a race of changing altitude. Rockwell rides for both Pinarello and the Easton Overland team. With that comes a number of components from Easton, including an EC90 SL crankset set up in a 1x format. The Shimano GRX Di2 rear derailleur is outfitted with a Kogel Kolossos oversized cage. The large pulley wheels spin on ceramic bearings, but the real wattage savings come from reduced chain articulation from the 19T lower pulley. The Grevil is unmistakenly a Pinarello and shares many of the same aero frame features as found on the company’s road bikes. The seatpost is proprietary to the frame. Meanwhile, the saddlebag is from Outer Shell, a small boutique maker based in California. Rockwell has made the switch from Speedplay pedals to Shimano SPD. The front brake rotor is shielded by Pinarello’s fork flap. Rockwell’s bike is set up with Shimano Ultegra rotors which carry a small weight penalty over Dura-Ace or XTR options. The Grevil has exposed cable routing between the cockpit and frame. A previous generation Wahoo Elemnt Bolt sits up front. Rockwell chooses to use Shimano Ultegra Di2 shifters instead of the gravel-specific GRX version citing that the shape is better suited to her preferences. Easton EC90 AX carbon gravel wheels are the pick. A pair of these weigh 1481 g and offer an internal rim width of 24 mm. The rims are an extremely shallow 21 mm. Another look at that 19T pulley wheel. Kogel themselves admit that shifting is compromised in the biggest three cogs. Awaiting the big day.
