Betsema set to race again after six-month suspension
Denise Betsema, the 26-year-old Dutch cyclocrosser who tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2019, is set to return to racing again after serving a suspension of six months.
According to a statement from the UCI, Betsema’s suspension began on April 5 of last year and ended in October. She will reportedly return to racing, with her Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal team, this Saturday at Kasteelcross Zonnebeke.
Betsema was among the most successful riders in women’s cyclocross last season, with a collection of victories that included the win at the Koksijde World Cup. In April, she was notified of an adverse analytical finding from anti-doping controls taken in January and February, and was provisionally suspended.
That suspension is apparently now in the rearview mirror, clearing Betsema to return to competition now. In its statement, the UCI said that it would not comment further on her case.
Betsema wrote in an Instagram post on Monday that she will offer further details on Tuesday, with Wielerflits reporting that she plans to speak at a press conference.
