Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego reschedules for November
San Diego’s Belgian Waffle Ride, which was initially planned to take place on May 3, has been rescheduled for November 8 amid rising concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers announced the news on Wednesday.
“We’re just as sad as you are, but we want to give you as much advanced notice as possible,” organizers said via social media.
“Our goal remains the same: Give riders, both professional and amateur, the most unique cycling event in the country—one that captures their imaginations from the day they register to the moment they cross that daunting finish line. We know we can only accomplish this by offering an environment that ensures your safety and that of the communities and businesses that host our events.”
The decision comes only a month after organizers announced that the popular gravel event would be expanding from its roots as a singular race in San Diego to a series of three races known as the Tripel Crown of Gravel. The San Diego round would have been the first of that trio of races; instead, it has been pushed to a spot on the calendar now past the events in Asheville, North Carolina and Cedar City, Utah (assuming they maintain their current dates).
The accompanying expo and media/VIP events will also now be held in the fall, from November 6 to November 8.
“Obviously, large and small gatherings are being banned based on how widespread the virus is, not to mention just how easily transmittable it is,” organizers said. “Covid-19 can be spread by people who don’t even know they have it… and thus the need for ALL OF US to take these precautions seriously.”
Dear Waffle Lovers:It’s only been a handful of days since we last posted regarding the Coronavirus, but so much has…
