Ballarat Mayor Cr Ben Taylor said he was “ecstatic” to hold on to the Nationals for another three years.
“As the major financial partner over many years we are delighted with today’s announcement,” he said. “It is confirmation of continued confidence in Ballarat to host the Road National Championships, which deliver economic and tourism benefits for regional Victoria beyond the five-days of competition, with repeat visitation from cyclists coming to Ballarat to ride the course and complete their pre-training.”
Cycling Australia CEO Steve Drake heralded the announcement.
“We’ve crowned many amazing national champions in Ballarat over the years, and the community has made a fantastic investment in this event,” he said. “We can’t wait to celebrate the next three championships here with the people of Ballarat.
“We’d also like to extend our thanks to the City of Ballarat, and to the Victorian State Government for their support in making this vision a reality.”
Ballarat held the Australian Road Nationals from 2002 through to 2004 and has hosted the event every year since 2007. By 2023 the championships will have been held in Ballarat for 17 straight years, and 20 of the last 22.
The 2020 Australian Road Nationals are currently underway in Ballarat and are set to conclude this Sunday with the elite women’s and men’s road races.
