Arlenis Sierra sprints to stage 1 win at the Sun Tour

Supported by

SHEPPARTON, Australia (CT) – Cuban champion Arlenis Sierra (Astana) has sprinted to victory on the opening day of the Herald Sun Tour. Anna Trevisi (Ale BTC Ljubljana) was second across the line in the reduced lead group, while up-and-coming Australian Ruby Roseman-Gannon (ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast) was third.

After a relatively quiet start to the race, Team Tibco forced a split in the crosswinds with about 40 km to go. With the help of Mitchelton-Scott — who had all four of their riders up front — the lead group of around 20 riders stayed away to contest the victory.

Sierra will wear the leader’s yellow jersey into tomorrow’s second and final stage. That stage starts with the descent off Falls Creek, a short flat loop, then a 30 km climb back up to Falls Creek.

More to come …
