Another rider tested positive to coronavirus at Tirreno-Adriatico
The 2020 Tour de France peloton might have avoided coronavirus so far, but the same can’t be said of those who raced at the recent Tirreno-Adriatico.
EF Pro Cycling announced on Tuesday that Magnus Cort Nielsen had tested positive after the race’s penultimate stage on Sunday. He didn’t start Monday’s final-stage ITT as a result.
“Rider Magnus Cort Nielsen returned a positive test for the COVID-19 virus on Sunday, September 13, after the Tirreno-Adriatico stage,” the team wrote in a press release. “He was isolated from the team and others, and then drove himself to Girona, Spain, where he is now in quarantine.
“All riders and team staff were then tested twice, on Sunday and Monday, September 14, and all returned negative results for COVID-19.”
The 27-year-old Dane had ridden an impressive race, with two third-place finishes in bunch sprints.
Cort isn’t the only rider to have tested positive to COVID-19 at Tirreno-Adriatico. CCC Team’s Lukasz Wisniowski withdrew from Sunday’s stage 7 due to illness and tested positive for COVID-19 later that day. His teammate and roommate Szymon Sajnok was pulled out of the race that evening and, like Wisniowski, was instructed to isolate.
