Hello again, CyclingTips readers.

Have you had a chance to do much climbing lately, either outside or on the trainer?

Phil Gaimon has, which makes sense considering the fact that the former road pro was eyeing a world record for completing the fastest Everesting attempt. And after putting in some serious training, Gaimon made his attempt on Monday.

When all was said and done, Gaimon had ascended 8,848 vertical meters in under eight hours en route to the new record. Impressive stuff.

In other (less great) news, the CCC team faces an uncertain future amid reports that title sponsor CCC will withdraw after 2020. Less than two years after team management found a sponsor to replace BMC, they again find themselves in dire straits. Here’s hoping there is better news on the horizon for the team, and for the many teams affected by the global pandemic and the widespread racing hiatus right now.

Stay safe, readers.

What’s news

| Report: CCC will withdraw as team sponsor after 2020

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Polish footwear brand CCC will withdraw as the the CCC team’s main sponsor at the end of the year. The news comes less than two years after the former BMC team was saved by the arrival CCC as a new sponsor.

Het Nieuwsblad reports that the team has reached an agreement to pay its riders at least half of their annual salaries this year. Beyond that, the team’s future is unclear.

| Gaimon sets Everesting record

Phil Gaimon broke the record for completing the fastest Everesting attempt on Monday in Los Angeles. The former road pro ascended 8,848 meters in a time of 7:52:12, topping the previous record time set in Australia by Tobias Lestrell.

Gaimon made the effort as part of an annual push to raise money for No Kid Hungry, a charity that works to combat child hunger in the United States. As of Tuesday afternoon he has already raised $79,000 towards his goal of $100,000.

| Van der Poel plans to continue racing MTB until 2024

Mathieu van der Poel has told Wielerflits that he will keep racing his mountain bike until the 2024 Olympics.

The versatile Dutchman had initially planned to focus more squarely on his other objectives after the mountain bike event at the Tokyo Olympics (now postponed from 2020 to 2021), but has since decided to continue balancing MTB with his ambitions in other disciplines for at least a few years longer.

| Nizzolo eyes San Remo

After several seasons derailed by injury, Giacomo Nizzolo got his 2020 campaign off to a fine start with stage wins at the Tour Down Under and Paris-Nice. Now, a few months into a sport-wide race stoppage, the two-time Giro d’Italia points champ says he remains focused on keeping his strong start going, with Milan-San Remo as the next big objective.

It would mean a lot [to win it],” he said in an interview on his NTT team’s website. “I think it’s the best race for a rider with my set of characteristics and it’s a race that starts in the city that I was born – which already gives me a special feeling.”
