American youngster Magnus Sheffield, who rode to a bronze medal in the junior men’s road race at Yorkshire Worlds in 2019 and holds the junior men’s world record in the individual pursuit on the track, has signed a deal to join the Ineos Grenadiers, the team has announced.
Sheffield, 19, spent most of the 2021 season with Rally, his first time racing at the ProTeam level, but he said last month on Twitter that he had left the team “as of August 18.” Now, he is set to step up to the WorldTour with the Ineos Grenadiers.
The team announced the news on Monday morning, a few hours before Sheffield rode to 10th place in the under-23 time trial at Flanders Worlds.
“Magnus has shown that he’s a gutsy racer, and one that when faced with challenges has the aptitude to create solutions to overcome what life throws at him,” said Ineos Greandiers racing director Rod Ellingworth in a team press release. “The way he sets himself goals and works towards them is a quality that fits with the Ineos Grenadiers’ ethos. Developing up and coming talent is now a real focus for this team, and it will be interesting to see how he grows over the coming seasons.”
In his relatively brief stint with Rally, Sheffield raced a program mostly focused on one-day events, which he noted he particularly enjoys. He expects to get a better idea of the events that best suit his skillset, however, as he acquires experience racing with his new team moving forward, saying, “The next couple years I’m looking forward to gaining as much experience as possible and really just trying to find the style of racing I like the most. Then also being able to help my teammates succeed.”
