Amanda Spratt wins her third Australian road title
BUNINYONG, Australia (CT) – She won her first two National road titles in Olympic years (2012 and 2016) and Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton-Scott) has continued that trend in 2020.
Spratt took out the race in a two-up sprint ahead of 40-year-old Justine Barrow (Roxsolt-Attaquer) while Grace Brown (Mitchelton-Scott) completed the podium 11 seconds behind.
Spratt, Barrow and Brown were part of the early breakaway that got clear on lap 3 of the nine-lap race around Mt. Buninyong. The trio extended their lead in the laps that followed and despite a number of attacks in the peloton, it was soon clear that the winner would come from the breakaway.
On the penultimate time up Mt. Buninyong Spratt attacked, dropping Brown while Barrow held firm. Spratt tried again to distance Barrow closer to the top, but again wasn’t able to shake her.
Spratt attacked twice on the final climb as well, but both times Barrow was able to hold on. As Brown continued to chase behind, and the peloton drifted further behind, Spratt and Barrow rode together to the finish.
Spratt began her sprint from behind and quickly opened a sizeable lead over Barrow, crossing the line to take her third national road title.
Jaime Gunning (Specialized Women’s Racing) was the first U23 rider across the line, in the peloton, taking out that title ahead of defending champion Sarah Gigante (Tibco) and Ruby Roseman-Gannon.
More to come …
