Amanda Spratt out of Giro Donne after COVID-19 positive

Amanda Spratt, who is working her way back to form after undergoing surgery on her iliac artery in the off-season, did not start stage 8 of the Giro Donne due to a positive COVID-19 result. The Australian finished eighth on the Queen stage of the Giro Donne, just under a minute behind the pink jersey of Annemiek van Vleuten.

Spratt was the highest placed Team BikeExchange-Jayco rider in the general classification in sixth with three stages to go. She has finished on the podium on two occasions, in 2018 behind Van Vleuten and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, and in 2019 again behind Van Vleuten and Anna van der Breggen.

“My Giro is over,” Spratt wrote on Twitter. “I felt a bit off in the stage yesterday and woke up this morning not feeling well. A test confirmed positive for Covid. So sad and disappointed when my favourite stages were finally here. Heading home and will focus on recovery.”

With a little over two weeks to the start of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift it is unclear if Spratt will be on the start line in Paris. Spratt’s roommate at the Giro Georgia Baker was also forced to abandon, as a close contact.

“Unfortunately my first Giro Donne has come to an end
a little early,” Baker said on Instagram. “My roomie Amanda Spratt tested positive for Covid this morning and being a close contact it’s better to be safe than sorry! I had a fun week with the team and I learnt a lot! Wishing my teamies all the best for the final stages, I’ll be cheering.”
