Alejandro Valverde wins stage 6 of the Critérium du Dauphiné
Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won stage 6 of the Critérium du Dauphiné on Friday ahead of Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) and Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe). Alexey Lutsenko (Astana-Premier Tech) took over the general classification, eight seconds ahead of his teammate Ion Izagirre.
The stage was billed as mountainous but did not do as much damage to the general classification as anticipated. Overnight Lukas Postlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) was distanced on the penultimate climb and lost his grip on the overall lead.
Geoghegan Hart followed in the footsteps of his teammate Geraint Thomas on stage 5 and tried a solo attack with 300 meters to go but he was brought back by Valverde who took the stage win. Geoghegan Hart settled for second with Konrad in third, while Lutsenko finished seventh in the reduced lead group, moving into the overall lead with two stages to go.
