Alaphilippe loses yellow due to time penalty, Yates now leads the Tour
Julian Alaphilippe lost control of the yellow jersey on Wednesday’s stage 5 of the Tour de France after he was handed a 20-second time penalty. Adam Yates is the new leader of the Tour de France.
On a day that saw the Tour peloton rolling comfortable only a largely downhill profile without even a breakaway to chase, Alaphilippe finished safely in the peloton only to drop down the general classification standings. Commissaires decided to dock the Frenchman by 20 seconds for taking a late bottle.
Rules prohibit bottle pickups inside the last 20 kilometers. Television images show Alaphilippe getting a bidon from a Deceuninck-Quick-Step staffer with around 17 kilometers to go.
He finished 16th on the stage, won by Wout van Aert, but fell from first to 16th on the general classification with his 20-second penalty.
Yates now leads the race with a three-second advantage over stage 4 winner Primoz Roglic.
