Alaphilippe hits moto at Flanders, will have metacarpal surgery

Julian Alaphilippe’s rough post-Worlds autumn continued on Sunday when he ran into the back of a slowing motorcycle and crashed hard, breaking the 2nd and 4th metacarpals in his right hand.

Alaphilippe had gained separation from the main group at the Tour of Flanders along with eventual winner Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. He was riding third in line behind his two breakaway companions. Van der Poel and van Aert swerved at the last second around a slowing motorcycle Alaphilippe had no time to respond. He flew over his bars and then hit the ground hard.

Alaphilippe screamed in pain on the ground as medics rushed to his side. He held his wrist and right arm.

The Frenchman will have surgery on Monday morning at the Herentals Clinic by Dr. De Schrijver.

Despite his run of excellent form in the weeks after the world championships, Alaphilippe autumn has been anything but smooth. At Liege-Bastogne-Liege he posted up early and was pipped at the line by Primoz Roglic, but was relegated for line deviation anyway and placed into 5th place. At Brabantse Pijl he took the win but almost did the same thing again.
